Love and Lead
May, 2005

Dear Dads,

For the last 20 or 30 years, I would have said that a husband's first responsibility was to provide for and protect his wife and children. While it is important to do this, it is not what the Bible says is the top priority for a husband.

God's top priority for a husband is for him to be a servant leader like Jesus was, and to give of himself for his wife in ways that are best for her.

Key point for dads:

The husband's top priority should be to lead and love his wife the way Jesus loves and leads the church.

To do this properly, we will need to be a husband who leads by serving, not by being "the boss" or worse yet a dictator.

Critical Bible verses are listed below as wives had just been told to submit to their husbands, since "the husband is the head of wife." (Please note that being the head does not make a person superior, but brings in leadership qualities and responsibilities.)

Ephesians 5:25-30 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for herĀ·.and cares forĀ·."

We need to treat our wife as well or better than we treat ourselves (Eph 5:28). We need to have agape love, which is loving a person even when they are not so lovable.

Jesus gave Himself up for us, and we need to follow His example and do the same for our wives. While we will need God's ongoing help to do this, we need to lead and love our wife by being a servant leader like Jesus was.
